We hosted a paper drive for America Recycles Day in 2011. In preparation for our event and in recognition for our success, we were published 3 times in the local newspaper. Radio spots were also aired on local public access radio. Students, parents, teachers, and community members who pledged to continue recycling were recognized with an "I recycle" sticker, button, or pencil.
Environmental Action Challenge
In the spring of 2010, 2011, and 2012, students completing an environmental action project as a follow-up activity using what they learned at Outdoor School are invited to attend a celebratory field trip back to Outdoor School for hiking, fishing, and fun!
Recycle Bowl
Participation in the first ever Recycle Bowl provided many opportunities to celebrate. During our cafeteria recycling competition, the grade who recycled the most each week earned extra time for recess. Small tokens of appreciation that were donated by various local businesses were distributed to students who went above and beyond recycling expectations. Students and classes who contributed to our magazine tower contest were recognized on daily announcements and in our newsletter to parents.
Recycler of the Year
Our school and teacher, Ken Mihalyov were recognized for their outstanding recycling efforts by the Maryland Recycling Network in 2010. Ken Mihalyov received the Dwight Copenhaver Recycler of the Year Award and West Middle School received the Outstanding Environmental and Community Leadership Award.
Green Recognition
The things above are major celebration activities for specific events held throughout the year. However, on a smaller scale, teachers recognize students and coworkers for their environmental responsibility through verbal recognition daily. Many of the staff and students truly appreciate the little things done and thank those involved on a regular basis. Establishment of a recognition system is on our list of targeted accomplishments for the upcoming school year.
